Types of Pebbles
River Pebbles (River Rock): Formed by the gentle tumbling of water in rivers and lakes. These are generally less smooth than beach pebbles because the current is less powerful than ocean waves.
Beach Pebbles: Shaped by the constant motion of ocean tides and waves. They are often very smooth, rounded, and come in a wide variety of colors influenced by local minerals.
Manufactured Pebbles: Artificially produced from natural stones like marble, granite, or sandstone, designed to meet specific size and shape requirements for commercial use.
Common Applications
Landscaping: Used for garden paths, walkways, decorative borders, and ground cover. They are a popular "water-smart" alternative to grass or mulch, helping to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.
Drainage: Due to their size and density, pebbles are excellent for drainage layers in pots, planters, or around drainage grates.
Aquascaping: Frequently used as aquarium substrate to provide a natural aesthetic and help with filtration.
Indoor & Decorative: Used in terrariums, as vase fillers for floral arrangements, as "pet rocks," or as a decorative finishing touch on top of soil in potted plants.
Zen Gardens: Commonly raked or arranged to create meditative, tranquil spaces.
